The Mid Cape region of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is centrally located on the peninsula and serves as the Cape’s transportation hub, providing arrival and departure points for ferries, flights, trains, and buses. The Mid Cape includes the towns of Barnstable, Dennis, and Yarmouth, each facing Nantucket Sound to the south and Cape Cod Bay to the north.
Barnstable: Barnstable, bordered by Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound, is made up of seven charming villages, each with its own distinct character. Hyannis, the largest village, serves as the commercial and transportation center of Cape Cod, welcoming planes, trains, buses, and Island ferries. Hyannis Main Street is a vibrant downtown area rich in history, arts, and culture. While Hyannis is the most well-known, the other six villages exemplify the quintessential Cape Cod lifestyle with their shady byways, beach roses, sturdy scrub pines, and weathered shingles. Hyannisport is particularly renowned as the summer home of President John F. Kennedy and his family.
Yarmouth: Yarmouth is one of the oldest towns on Cape Cod and enjoys shoreline on both Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. It offers three distinctive villages rich in history. Yarmouth Port, running along historic Route 6A, is an attractive, unspoiled area featuring former sea captains' homes, antique shops, and galleries. The villages of West and South Yarmouth are more commercially developed, with Route 28 lined with hotels, motels, restaurants, souvenir shops, and miniature golf courses. Yarmouth is home to several beaches, ranging from cozy bay beaches to expansive, sandy shores ideal for windsurfing.
Dennis: Crossing into Dennis, a more peaceful Cape Cod emerges. The town boasts stately sea captains' houses, rambling summer homes, and artists' studios, all contributing to its charm. The quiet residential villages of Dennis and East Dennis run along Route 6A and Cape Cod Bay, while West Dennis and Dennis Port lie to the south along Nantucket Sound. The commercial hub of South Dennis provides easy access to Routes 134 and 6. Dennis Port captures the essence of "Olde Cape Cod," as famously sung by Patti Page, with oceanfront dining and seaside motels. Dennis is celebrated for its beautiful beaches, many of which feature calm, bayside waters.
